IS09001 - 30 Years of Positive Influence on the Bottom Line
At over 30 years old the ISO9001 standard has gone from being a management buzz term to a mainstay of modern day business strategy. Why have so many organisations taken the plunge with certification and does compliance have direct effect on the profitability of an organisation?
A recent report by Neil Hannah (2011) suggests the continued success of the standard, with an 8% growth in uptake per annum, points not only to the benefits for the end-user of the manufactured product but also to the substantial financial benefits for the certified manufacturing organisation.
Courbet et al (2002) suggest over a five year period of registration, compliance and continued certification with ISO9001 that:
- Certified organisations improved performance, as measured by return of sales
- Non-certified firms showed declining performance
The BSI go further to suggest that the improvement in the bottom line amongst average-sized certified companies equates to a .25% increase in profits, or £150,000.
There are many factors that affect profitability, although not many do we have over 30 years of experience managing. ISO9001 continues to grow and develop to meet the requirements of modern day business.
