NICE to survive the Health & Social Care Bill 2011
The continued wrangling over the Health & Social Care Bill 2011 will have no effect on The National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), with chairman Professor Sir Michael Rawlins assuring it’s future at the opening of the institute’s annual meeting in Birmingham, UK on the 10th May 2011.
A slight change in name, if not acronym, seems to be the only change that will come to pass when eventually the Bill is passed by parliament. NICE will then come to stand for the National for Health and Care Excellence, with the existing remit expected to remain, and the addition of powers with regard to Social Care.
NICE will continue to provide national guidance on the promotion of good health and prevention and treatment of ill health. This year will see the publishing of 39 technology/ drug appraisals, 21 clinical guidelines, 5 public health guidelines and 30 quality standards.
NICE quality standards are a set of specific, concise statements that act as a marker for high quality, cost-effective patient care, covering the treatment and prevention of different diseases and conditions. Their work is central to supporting Government’s vision for an NHS focussed on delivering the best possible outcomes for patients.
